UNDER THE INFLUENCE. Correspondences between photography, cinema, and the photobook.

Although traditionally assigned different domains and competencies, the correspondence between photography and cinema has been constant. Photography and Cinema by David Campany (Reaktion Books, 2008) was one of the first publications to address a comparative history of both media. From there, other investigations emerged that delved into their shared connections and languages. In 2017, Aperture Photobook Review magazine —an undisputed reference in the photobook ecosystem— dedicated its 12th issue, titled Under the Influence and edited by curator Daria Tuminas, to reflect for the first time on the relationship between the photobook and cinema within the same framework. Following that line, in this talk we propose to broaden the perspective and trace a comparative journey —from the cultural to the ontological— that connects not only photography and cinema, but also the photobook.
