Talk — The Africa-Europe relationship: an inequality maintained by disinformation at Casa África, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The Rotary Club Maspalomas International Peace Camp celebrates its 12th edition, once again making the south of Gran Canaria the epicenter of coexistence, peace, and solidarity. Young people from different countries, selected based on their academic performance, will live together for a few days through this summer program which aims to promote Peace, friendship, and international understanding through educational, cultural, sports, and recreational activities.
Each year, the Camp offers an interesting series of conferences to invite reflection on current issues within the framework of the Maspalomas Summer University, organized by the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), and the Cabildo de Gran Canaria.
Once again, Casa África collaborates with the Rotary Club by hosting one of the Camp's conferences at its headquarters, this year with Mr. Assane Diop, a graduate and master's in Translation of Foreign Languages Applied to Tourism and International Trade from the Gaston Berger University of Senegal.
Africa is an immensely rich continent that, however, is going through profound economic and social crises. Political instability, the exploitation of its resources, and illiteracy are part of the problem, but they do not explain everything. These ills are the corollary of Western selfishness, the lack of commitment of many African leaders, and part of their elites.
And what sustains this cycle is disinformation, both internal and external. And in that, we all have responsibility.
That is why the conference given by Mr. Diop is titled The Africa-Europe relationship: an inequality maintained by disinformation.
This work starts from an idea: disinformation not only hides problems, it exacerbates and perpetuates them. This situation harms Africa and Africans, both inside and outside the continent.
By eliminating disinformation, African populations, especially the youth, can be counted on to fight for their rights and be the architects of their own development.
Mr. Diop is a polyglot with Wolof as his mother tongue, fluent in Spanish, French, and English. He also speaks Mandinka and Fula at a basic level and has a beginner's level in Bambara and Italian. For all these reasons, since 2023 he has worked as a teacher, translator, mediator, and technical assistant with the migrant population, in addition to working as an interpreter for the Guardia Civil in Las Palmas.
His conference will take place on June 29, 2026, at 10:30 AM in the Nelson Mandela auditorium of Casa África.
