Concert – Fremont Street «Old Las Vegas»
Concert – Fremont Street «Old Las Vegas» with Fasur Rodríguez, from the Musicando series, in Plaza del Pilar Nuevo, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The Municipal Symphonic Band of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria presents this extraordinary concert, which joins the celebration of our most emblematic festival: Carnival. On this occasion, the ensemble takes advantage of this year's Carnival theme, Las Vegas, to propose a musical journey to one of the most iconic imaginaries of the 20th century.
The Las Vegas valley received its name from the Spanish traveler Antonio Armijo, who arrived there in 1829 following an old Spanish trail from Los Angeles to California. However, this concert focuses on a later stage of its history. In 1844, the explorer John C. Frémont arrived in the valley when the territory was still part of Mexico, and in his honor the city's main street, founded in 1905, bears his name: Fremont Street.
However, it was not until 1931, the year gambling was legalized as a measure to alleviate the effects of the Great Depression, that the construction of large casinos began and the development of the city known as “Sin City” started. With the birth of the city of vice also came the casinos and, with them, the great shows, which would experience their golden age from the fifties onwards.
Artists like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, or Elvis Presley were precursors of the legendary shows that still today are part of the imaginary of old Las Vegas, the city of second chances. Songs from that era are what can be heard in this concert, performed by the Municipal Symphonic Band of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria alongside crooner Fasur Rodríguez, who will give voice to emblematic themes such as More, Cry Me the River, Blue Moon, or Come Fly with Me.
These works, with spectacular arrangements in the style of the great big bands of the era, will recreate the atmosphere of those unforgettable nights in Las Vegas. The Band will offer two concerts, on February 12 and 26, at the José Antonio Ramos Auditorium and in Plaza del Pilar Nuevo, in Vegueta. Two essential events for lovers of jazz and American swing.
Free admission until full capacity.
