Sport — XX Juan Carlos Suárez Monzón Memorial at the Lomo Cementerio Municipal Ground, Telde, Gran Canaria.
The Lomo Cementerio Municipal Ground will host this Wednesday, June 17, starting at 7:30 PM, the celebration of the XX Juan Carlos Suárez Monzón Memorial of Canarian Wrestling, an event already consolidated in the local sports calendar that pays tribute to one of the most relevant figures in the promotion of this traditional sport in the municipality. The event, framed within the San Juan Bautista 2026 Festivals, is organized by the Castro Morales Canarian Wrestling Club and has the collaboration of the Department of Physical Activity and Sports of the Telde City Council.
The figure of Juan Carlos Suárez Monzón from Telde remains closely linked to Canarian wrestling as a historic leader of Castro Morales, whose dedication and commitment were fundamental to keeping the tradition of this vernacular sport alive in Telde and on the island of Gran Canaria. The memorial program will include a wrestling match between two Castro Morales teams (C.L. Castro Morales A vs C.L. Castro Morales B), as well as various women's Canarian wrestling challenges, reinforcing the inclusive and participatory nature of the event. Previously, the attending public will be able to enjoy exhibitions of traditional Canarian disciplines, including the game of garrote, by the Maestro Paquito Santana Family School; the plowing demonstration, by Santiago Santana, great-grandson of the Faro de Maspalomas; and a stone-lifting exhibition by Alberto Mateo.
