Inauguration – Exhibition: Mother-of-Pearl Soul
Inauguration of the Exhibition ‘Mother-of-Pearl Soul’ at Casa de Colón, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
This temporary exhibition proposes an approach to Mexican enconchados, a unique artistic technique that evokes the iridescent sheen of Asian lacquers. These are paintings in which fine pieces of polished mother-of-pearl are inlaid onto panels, which are then painted with oil. In this fusion of materials, between glazes and opacities of polychromy, the iridescent glow of the shells is glimpsed… the mother-of-pearl soul of these works.
Through a series of 6 enconchados, with the theme The Siege of Vienna, exhibited for the first time in the Canary Islands, the exhibition allows visitors to discover the formal and symbolic richness of this unique art, developed in the 17th and 18th centuries. Under the influence of European Baroque, and in dialogue with local knowledge and pre-Hispanic techniques, enconchados represent one of the most complex and original expressions of cultural mestizaje that emerged in the context of Globalization.
A project by Casa de Colón.
