Opera – «ANDREA CHÉNIER»
Opera — ANDREA CHÉNIER at the Pérez Galdós Theater, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
59th Opera Season of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Alfredo Kraus 2026
Andrea Chénier is an opera in four acts set during the French Revolution, inspired by the real life of the poet André Chénier. The story begins at an aristocratic party, where Chénier, an idealist, criticizes the injustices of the regime. There he meets Maddalena di Coigny, a young noblewoman with whom he falls in love. With the outbreak of the Revolution, social roles are inverted: Maddalena loses her status and her family, while Gérard, a former servant who silently loved Maddalena, becomes a powerful revolutionary official. Although Gérard has Chénier arrested for political reasons, his love for Maddalena leads him to try to save him. Even so, Chénier is sentenced to death.
Verismo opera with a historical setting, music by Umberto Giordano and an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica, based on the life of the French poet André Chénier (1762-1794), who was executed during the French Revolution. Premiered at La Scala in Milan on March 28, 1896.
