L’elisir d’amore (The Elixir of Love) is a two-act opera buffa that tells the story of the naive peasant Nemorino, who is in love with the rich and beautiful Adina. She, flirtatious and skeptical, does not reciprocate his feelings and announces her wedding to Sergeant Belcore. Desperate, Nemorino buys an «elixir of love» (in reality, cheap wine) from the charlatan Dulcamara, hoping to win her over. After several entanglements, misunderstandings, and an unexpected inheritance, Adina realizes that she sincerely loves Nemorino. Finally, love triumphs and they both end up together.
The Elixir of Love (original title in Italian, L’elisir d’amore) is a two-act opera buffa with music by Gaetano Donizetti and an Italian libretto by Felice Romani, based on Eugène Scribe's libretto Le philtre (1831) for Daniel François Aubert's opera. .
It premiered on May 12, 1832, at the Teatro Canobbiana in Milan.
