We go back to the sixties to discover the most protest-driven side of an oppressed Canary Islands. In those turbulent times, the Los Cancán company is about to premiere its next show at the Fígaro cabaret: ‘The Wedding’, a risky satire that challenges Francoism. This cabaret becomes the perfect refuge for priests, soldiers, drag queens, and revolutionaries to mix amidst sequins, love, heartbreak, and laughter… All that, together and mixed, culminates in ‘The Marriage of Figaro’.
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1962. A full and fierce dictatorship reigning in a Canary Islands where censorship dictates over any type of artistic expression. A complex historical moment for the survival of the bustling Fígaro cabaret, which is about to premiere its next show: ‘The Wedding’, a satire against the Francoist regime by the successful Los Cancán company. Despite the risk involved, priests, businessmen, soldiers, drag queens, singers, and revolutionaries will mix amidst feathers, sequins, love, heartbreak, and laughter…
The text is based on the literary classic The Marriage of Figaro, of Beaumarchais, and lands on our city's cultural scene with a clear intention: to make yesterday's texts today's art.
