Theater – The Yugoslavs, by Juan Mayorga, at the Cuyas Theater, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Author and director: Juan Mayorga
A play about sadness, love, and the power of words
“My grandfather had a bar, and every night he would come back telling stories he had just experienced with his customers. I suppose that's where my desire to write this play was born.”
— Juan Mayorga
In The Yugoslavs, the acclaimed playwright Juan Mayorga invites us to reflect on the transformative power of language and the fragility of affections.
It all begins when a waiter, unable to console his wife plunged into sadness, asks for help from a customer he has seen lift someone else's spirits just by talking to them. Meanwhile, she travels the city with a map in search of a mysterious place called The Yugoslavs, perhaps a refuge, perhaps a memory, where words and silences meet.
With delicacy and depth, Mayorga weaves a story about love, loss, hope, and the power of words to save or lose us.
An intimate, poetic, and profoundly human play.
