Theater — Music for Hitler at the Pérez Galdós Theater, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Pau Casals was forced into exile in the south of France after the Spanish Civil War. With all his resources and great effort, he dedicated himself to helping thousands of compatriots crowded into nearby labor camps.
In 1943, under Nazi occupation, the music genius received a disturbing invitation to play before the Führer. Casals knew that refusing to do so could lead to terrible consequences.
These dramatic events are what inspired the authors to write Music for Hitler, an emotional text that recreates the personality of one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
The historical moment of the visit of Nazi soldiers to Villa Colette, Casals' residence during his stay in Prades (France), with the request for the maestro to perform before the Führer has been brilliantly recreated and dramatized by the playwrights Yolanda García Serrano and Juan Carlos Rubio.
The situation presented is real. The inner conflict of the character Johann, a cellist in civilian life turned soldier by wartime recruitment who is torn between absolute admiration for his idol, Maestro Casals, and his military duty as a soldier, could well be fictional, but therein lies the greatness of theater.
