Theatre — «Residency 6: Lear» at the Insular Theatre Hall, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Lear, an original work by Miguel Ángel Martínez, comes to life on the SIT stage under the direction of Luis O’Malley. The main performance is by Miguel Ángel Maciel in a production by Atlante Cultura & Teatro. This residency delves into the classic themes of power and madness from a renewed and deeply theatrical perspective.
Starting from the tragic outcome of William Shakespeare's King Lear, Miguel Ángel Martínez immerses us in a poetic and heartbreaking exploration of the monarch's fate. In this version, Lear does not die in the final scene of the original play, but survives, condemned to wander through the misery of a gloomy alley in any city. Stripped of his power, without homeland or refuge, he becomes a wandering specter of his own past, a king without a kingdom, a shadow of what he once was.
From that space of absolute solitude, almost bordering on madness, Lear revisits the key moments of his life that have led him to this abyss. Amidst laments, fury, and moments of devastating lucidity, the protagonist embodies the essential characters of his story: Kent, his faithful counselor and jester at the same time; his daughters Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia, distorted reflections of love and betrayal; Gloucester, the noble who also suffered the cruel machinations of fate; and the King of France, witness to the injustice and blindness of the old monarch.
This monologue is a visceral confrontation with the weight of power, human fragility, and the inexorable wheel of destiny. In a world where love and betrayal become blurred, Lear faces his own tragedy, searching for answers in the echo of his memories.
