The Historic Site of Arucas was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1976, commemorating this year the 50th anniversary of a protection that has allowed the preservation and transmission of one of the most unique urban landscapes in Gran Canaria.
The value of a Historic Site lies not only in its most emblematic buildings but also in what unites them, gives them meaning, and builds a common identity. In Arucas, that common thread is stone. Extracted from the territory itself, the quarry stone of Arucas, and masterfully worked for generations, this material has shaped the city's image and accompanies its history from ancient settlements to the configuration of its current urban center.
The stone of Arucas is not just building material: it is a memory of work, of collective effort, and of traditional trades such as stonemasonry and carving, knowledge that was an essential part of local life. Its constant presence brings unity to the ensemble and speaks of a close relationship between community, landscape, and natural resources.
Throughout the tour, we will be able to understand how the municipality's life was articulated through its civil, religious, and domestic spaces. Buildings such as the Church of San Juan Bautista, the Town Hall, the House of Culture, or the historic Casa Gourié — now the Municipal Museum of Arucas — will allow us to approach different chapters of this shared history. The museum, housed in a prominent traditional dwelling, preserves and disseminates part of the city's artistic and documentary heritage, with a special presence of creators linked to the municipality and works that help understand Arucas' cultural sensibility.
We will also explore the importance of water in local development, through dams, reservoirs, and the Water Estate, as well as the traces of daily life that still resonate in streets, squares, and facades.
This tour invites us to discover Arucas from a deeper perspective: as a space where architecture, art, landscape, and memory dialogue with each other. Here, stone not only built the city; it also holds the memory of its community.
