Program:
- 09:00 Welcome
- 09:30 Inaugural Lecture: Literary Imaginaries and Realities for a Shared Space
- 10:45 Coffee in the courtyard of Casa África
- 11:15 Musical Performance. Luis Firmino (Cape Verde)
- 12:00 Development of the Conversations on heritage in Azores, Madeira, Cape Verde, and Canary Islands (until 14:00h)
- 16:30 Continuation of the Conversations and Poetry Recital from Azores, Madeira, Cape Verde, and Canary Islands (until 20:00h)
Canary Islands, Azores, Madeira, and Cape Verde, Macaronesia, since time immemorial, share the same geography and the same myths. Archipelagos still almost unknown to each other, like siblings in disagreement, each has formed in its own way in the face of the follies of men, the inclemency of the trade winds, the memory of looting and shipwrecks.
These Macaronesian Conversations call us again to continue a journey, a path that comes from many generations of men and women who have understood better than anyone the fact of our island fortune.
We inhabit an extensive surface of sky and sea, surrounded by the Atlantic, from a portion of isolated and fragmented lands. We are inhabitants of different islands and archipelagos who have known, with the same Atlantic roots, how to bear different fruits.
We celebrate the Atlantic, we celebrate the archipelagos of Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, and Cape Verde, we celebrate their people and Macaronesia, diverse in its political geography, its economy, and its society, but with a shared feeling when facing the challenges that current times demand. We also celebrate two islanders, two men of their time and ours: Baltasar Lopes and Pedro García Cabrera. Who inspire and incite the determination to remain firm, on the front of all battles.
We affirm that the world, as we live it today, challenges us to rethink the future from a perspective of «realistic utopia», in which the value of regions, of what is local, of what is endogenous, will be decisive in designing a new paradigm of human development, different from what is currently imposed on us on a global scale.
We also affirm that archipelagos, due to their specific geography and their particular historical, cultural, and social condition, will be a laboratory from which the entire world, with all its humanity, can be observed, questioned in its development, and where its future can be tested and projected.
In this edition, culture and economy —always present in the Conversations and in our lives— will give way to two areas of our Atlantic concerns, namely:
- Cultural heritage: from the perspective of the challenges faced by the management of a unique and singular heritage, of undeniable global interest.
- Innovative and adaptive technologies for the island environment, applied in the fields of agriculture, aquaculture, livestock, fishing, energy, and water supply.
