Talk – The weather in the Canary Islands
Talk – «The weather in the Canary Islands: Meteorological phenomena and how to stay well informed» at the Municipal Library of Santa Brígida, Gran Canaria.
A public outreach talk aimed at the general public and focused on understanding the climate and atmospheric weather in the Archipelago.
The conference will be given by José Antonio Monreal Martínez, Senior Meteorology Technician at the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), assigned to the AEMET Territorial Delegation in the Canary Islands. Monreal Martínez has extensive professional experience in the field of forecasting, meteorological observation, and climate study, as well as a notable outreach work related to the atmospheric phenomena affecting the Islands.
During the talk, the main elements that determine the climate of the Canary Islands and how these influence the weather usually recorded in the island territory will be addressed in a clear and accessible manner. Likewise, the risks associated with certain adverse meteorological situations will be explained, helping to differentiate key concepts such as meteorological warning and alert, which are fundamental for a correct interpretation of official information.
The presentation will also include an explanation of the work carried out by AEMET, both in climate study and in meteorological forecasting and observation tasks. In this context, special emphasis will be placed on how to access meteorological information via the Internet, identify reliable sources, and correctly interpret forecasts to know what the weather will be like and where to consult it.
This activity is part of the cultural and outreach program of the Department of Culture directed by Avelina Fernández Manrique de Lara.
Note: admission is free until full capacity is reached.
