Cinema – Nika, The tropical pilot whale

10 April @ 19:00 - 20:00

Film – Screening of the short film «Nika, The Tropical Pilot Whale» at the Elder Museum, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

SPAIN, 2024; 29 mins; Just Minsk SL & Felipe Ravina Olivares;

A short documentary where Felipe Ravina, documentarian, science communicator, and graduate in Marine Sciences, forges a connection with a tropical pilot whale named Nika, on the island of Tenerife, (Canary Islands). This unusual connection with the animal increases his concern for the current state of the island and its biodiversity. It is a cry to the heavens for the protection, conservation, and defense of the natural spaces and their fauna in this outermost region where the world's largest unique population of tropical pilot whales is found.

The piece shows the overexploitation to which Tenerife is subjected and the disastrous way in which the island has been managed in recent decades. An infinite growth that is not only threatening natural spaces and their biodiversity more than ever, but also the coexistence and local development of the people of Tenerife.

Directed by Jose Hernández and Felipe Ravina Olivares, this documentary aims to promote a change towards real sustainable development, with a future in which we coexist with nature to continue enjoying Tenerife and the rest of the Canary Islands in their wild and natural state.

The piece has been honored with more than 26 international selections and has been awarded the CimaSub Golden Rail or selected for the International Ocean Film Tour, two highly prestigious national and international competitions in the world of marine documentary cinema.

This documentary was filmed under the permission and authorization of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge of the Government of Spain. These works are regulated under Royal Decree 1727/2007, of December 21, which establishes measures for the protection of cetaceans. Swimming with cetaceans is prohibited in Spain.
