Documentary — «The Silbo in the resistance: Screening of The Fugitive»

5 March @ 17:00 - 19:30

Screening of the Documentary «Whistling in the resistance: The Fugitive» in the Humanities Auditorium, Obelisco Campus, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Screening of the documentary The Fugitive followed by a subsequent discussion on the importance of whistling in historical cultural resistance.

The Rector of ULPGC, Lluís Serra, will open the event, with the participation of Ms. Helena Hernández Casañas, daughter of the protagonist, and Ms. Juana Casañas, author of the book «History of Manuel, ‘the Fugitive'». Next, the paper «Brief notes on whistling as a means of communication in resistance» will be presented by researcher David Díaz Reyes and the director of the Whistling Classroom, Professor María Jesús Rodríguez Medina. Subsequently, the documentary «The Fugitive», by Pablo Fajardo, will be screened… followed by a discussion with the director, Eligio Hernández, Helena Hernández, David Díaz, and Juan Lasso.

The event aims to disseminate knowledge about other uses of whistling, such as that documented in the audiovisual production The Fugitive, where whistling is shown as a key element for survival in the captivity of some political persecuted during the Civil War and the first years of the Spanish post-war period. Thus, the objective is also to generate a space for knowledge dissemination and open and public debate on the whistled language in the Canary Islands in uses largely unknown by society, thereby fostering its interest and revitalization.

Free admission until full capacity.

In collaboration with the DISA Foundation.
