Opera – «The Threepenny Opera» at the Pérez Galdós Theater, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Who is the bigger criminal, the one who robs a bank or the one who founds it?

‘The Threepenny Opera’, the classic by  Bertolt Brecht y Kurt Weill, directed by Mario Vega and performed by Coque Malla uses this irony to criticize the capitalist system and conventional notions of property.

‘The Threepenny Opera’ is the fourth production of the Segunda Lectura scenic project developed by the Pérez Galdós Theater and unahoramenos.

Premiered in Berlin in 1928, The Threepenny Opera was born to shake consciences. The alliance between Brecht and Weill broke the codes of bourgeois musical theater, opting for a popular aesthetic, full of satire, jazz, and social critique. The story of Macheath, a criminal who survives by exploiting a corrupt system, became an implacable mirror of capitalist hypocrisy. Almost a century later, the text's relevance remains. In this new version, the action moves to an interwar London, steeped in corruption and inequality. An abandoned slaughterhouse becomes the symbolic setting for a society where human life is processed like cheap meat.

Mario Vega's direction reinforces the Brechtian message by opting for scenic distancing, the visibility of theatrical mechanisms, and the breaking of the fourth wall. The spectator is not a mere observer: they are constantly challenged, forced to look and question. «The slaughterhouse is not just a set: it is a character in itself. It is the visual metaphor of a system that turns people into products» , notes Vega.

The role of Mackie Navaja will be played by Coque Malla, accompanied by Carmen Barrantes, Paula Iwasaki, Omar Calicchio, Andrea Guasch, Esther Izquierdo, Miquel Mars y Ruth Sánchez. The musical direction is by Miguel Malla, and the creative team is completed with the National Theater Award winner Juan Gómez-Cornejo in lighting design and Elda Noriega in costume design.
