Presentation – Book: A Wounded Paradise
Book Presentation «A Wounded Paradise» at the Guiniguada Theater, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The Canary Film Archive hosts the book presentation A wounded paradise. How Hollywood reinvented the Canary Islands, by art historian and professor at the University of La Laguna Gonzalo M. Pavés. In this event, the author will be accompanied by his collaborator Juan Antonio Ribas Pérez, a key figure in the dissemination of cinema in the Canary Islands from the ULL Film Classroom.
The book is a research work about the American film Grand Canary (Fox, 1934), a production filmed in Hollywood whose plot, set in the archipelago, outraged island emigrants due to the distorted and harmful image it offered of the Canary Islands. Pavés reconstructs the repercussions of this film, the protests it generated, and the consequences it had for the construction of the islands' external image at a key moment for the take-off of tourism.
The presentation will take place at the Guiniguada Theater on March 17, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free until full capacity is reached.
Free admission until full capacity.
